Company

Mercana is one of North America’s leading home furnishings wholesalers, with interior designers and retail partners around the globe. As a “design-first” company, we produce unique pieces for the home each season, including wall art, furniture, lighting, and home decor accessories.

Summary:
As a Furniture Designer, you will be responsible for conceptualizing, designing, and developing stylish and functional furniture pieces - such as seating, tables, and storage - as well as home décor products, including lighting and accessories. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to stay ahead of market trends and understand customer preferences, while leveraging your knowledge of materials like wood, metal, and upholstery. Your designs must balance creativity with production feasibility, working closely with our overseas development team and manufacturing partners to ensure successful product execution. Strong communication, problem-solving, and time management skills are essential to effectively manage design challenges and cross-team collaboration.

Key Responsibilities:

Research & Development (R&D):

  • Stay informed on industry trends by following key designers, attending design shows, and analyzing competitor products to ensure innovative and trendsetting designs.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to identify market opportunities, customer preferences, and product requirements, driving continuous improvement in design concepts.
  • Create mood boards, concept sketches, and preliminary design drafts, ensuring that each design balances style, functionality, manufacturing constraints, and cost-effectiveness.

Drawings & Product Documentation:

  • Produce detailed production drawings and product specifications, including technical features and material requirements.
  • Maintain thorough documentation for each project, including design iterations, technical specifications, revisions, and support materials, ensuring alignment with project timelines.

Product Development:

  • Review and approve prototypes and samples, ensuring they meet design specifications, quality standards, and market requirements.
  • Adhere to internal product and quality standards throughout the development process.
  • Supervise prototyping and testing to ensure that the product meets safety, durability, and quality benchmarks.
  • Collaborate with overseas manufacturing partners to guide production, providing clear design instructions and addressing any design-related issues that arise during manufacturing.
  • Support the Quality Control (QC) team by providing technical solutions to production challenges, ensuring consistency and quality in the final product.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):

  • Timely submission and delivery of design concepts, specifications, and product development solutions.
  • Percentage of successfully translated designs into manufacturing-ready prototypes.
  • Quality and customer satisfaction with the final products, as indicated by commercial performance.
  • Cost-effective designs that meet budgetary and manufacturing constraints.
  • Effective communication and collaboration with internal teams and overseas manufacturing partners.
  • Innovation and creativity, demonstrated through the introduction of new product lines or unique features.
